Lab/Research engineer - Lignin operations

We are looking for a Lab/Research engineer – Lignin operations RoD to our Biomaterials Innovation team. This position is based in Sickla and you will report to RoD Team Manager Lignin Operations.



The Biomaterials innovation organisation focuses on identifying business opportunities and developing new products in markets for renewable materials and bio-based chemicals. Our aim is to work closely with our customers to understand their strategies and devise solutions to support and boost their competitive advantage.


The team

Lignin Operations is a newly started team with the ambition to become the center of excellence within lignin quality and production technologies, supplying current and future businesses with raw material. The team is located both in Finland and Sweden, today consisting of research, technology, and production competences using available and new techniques.

  • Generate and develop ideas for new products and processes in line with Biomaterials Innovation strategy. Generate and report inventions according to Innovation guidelines.
  • Manage smaller projects or tasks with given targets, timelines, and resources.
  • Present own work and own competence area in internal project meetings. Report own work according to guidelines.
  • Monitor technology in the own competence area.
  • Responsibility for instruments, laboratory methods and materials Coach junior colleagues. Lead tasks and assignments.

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent knowledge.
  • Practical biomass (lignin, pulp, related liquor streams and products) laboratory experience is required.
  • Experiences of typical laboratory techniques, common practice and nomenclature within the biomass handling and processing area.
  • Desire to develop the area of lignin production and processing by an experimental and empirical approach.
  • Capability to develop new products and processes in lab or demo scale. Proven experiences in R&D task planning and execution. Documented evidence of results in applicable research work.
  • Excellent Business English.

We promote hybrid way of working but expect person to present at the office/mill on average 3 days a week depending on task on hand; ability for reasonable amount of business travel is part of the position requirements.

The Biomaterials division meets the growing demand for bio-based solutions to replace fossil-based and hazardous materials. Stora Enso uses all fractions of biomass, like lignin, to develop new solutions. Our work to replace fossil-based materials includes novel applications such as carbon for energy storage, bio-based binders and bio-based carbon fiber.
